A Valentine Short

This short is actually just a part of a story that I think I want to finish. Seemed fitting since Valentine's Day is coming up. Happy Valentine's Day everyone. :)

The dessert was a strange place for The Backstreet Boys to show up. Hanna wasn’t complaining though, she thought they were kind of hot. Next thing she knew, she was being shaken awake and rolled over to find her sister standing over her looking really annoyed.

“This better be really important,” Hanna said. “It’s still dark out and I would like to go back to being serenaded.” She could still hear the music so maybe if she went back to sleep real quick she can get back there. It was fading though and something was off about it.

“Yeah? Well, I want it to stop so go out and get your boyfriend.”

“What boyfriend? You know I don’t have one anymore. What are you even talking about?”

Her sister went to their window. “I’m talking about Larry who apparently wants to change your relationship status.” She yanked the window open and the music got louder. Way louder. And Larry was singing horribly over top of it to The Backstreet Boys, The Meaning of Being Lonely. She really shouldn’t be surprised.

Hanna rolled out of bed and stuck her head out of the now open window only to see Larry staggering in front of their motion sensed light, cradling a stereo in his arms.

“Larry, what are you doing?”

“I’m singing about my feelings to you!”

“We broke up two months ago, Larry.”

“I know! And it sucks. You’re so awesome, Hanna.”

“Are you drunk!?”

“I might’ve had a drink… or twelve.”

She came back inside when she heard her bedroom door open and her mom came in. “What is going on out there?”

“Hanna’s ex is drunk outside and he won’t be quiet!” Her sister yelled the last part at the window.

“Shut up, Meghan. He’ll leave soon.” She just grunted and pulled the covers over her head.
Hanna went back to the window and leaned out. “Where did you get that thing?”

“My friend let me borrow it. And the CD was in my sister’s car. Perfect!”

“Did you drive here?!”

“Nah, it was nice out and I thought I’d walk. Stupid sister wouldn’t give me her keys anyways.”

Her mom came up behind her. “Is this what you kids do? You get into college and it’s all drinking and love making.”

“Mom!” Hanna and Meghan stopped her at the same time. Hanna held her face in her hands. This was getting worse by the second. She could already see lights coming on in their neighbor’s windows.

“You have to leave. Now. Someone’s going to call the cops.”

“But there are so many words for the broken heart!”

“You’re lucky your father sleeps like a log or he would have already called the cops.”

“Someone is going to have to call the cops for me and an ambulance for him in a minute.” Meghan bolted to the window and pushed Hanna out of the way. “Seriously! Some of us have things to do in the morning!”

“I can’t go until I talk to Hanna. Tell me why I can’t be there where you are!”

“Larry, please.” Hanna nudged Meghan away and she flopped herself back into her bed. “Look, you’ve convinced me. I’ll talk to you in the morning, text you or something, but you have got to stop the music.”

“Score! Knew I could get you back. No one can fight the Backstreet Boys.” He finally shut off the stereo and sat next to it on the ground. “Don’t worry, I’ll just stay here. We’ll talk over breakfast. I’ll make you an omelet.”

Their mother looked out of the window and sighed. “I’m going to get that poor boy inside.”

“No!” Hanna caught her wrist as she tried to leave the room. “Please do not do that. I’ll call his sister and she’ll come get him in a few minutes. Just let me handle this ok?”

She looked at her hard for a moment then said, “Ten minutes. That’s it, then he’s sleeping it off on the couch.”

Luckily, Hanna had already been texting and his sister messaged her back just as her mom was leaving her room. 'Oh man, I’m on my way' she read then took another look out of the window before closing it and going back to bed. The light had gone out but she could still see the dark lump that Larry made.

She sat on her bed and, in spite of everything, she laughed. She didn’t know if it was because this situation was totally bizarre or because that same spontaneity was part of why she fell for him in the first place.

When Dad was the Easter Bunny

We heard mom scream first. It was like the time I showed her the toad I found in the puddles after it rained. Then I heard Dad scream. He sounded like he was watching one of his football games. Me and my little brother ran to their room.

"Whoa... Dad, you've got ears." Tod said.

"Like not people ears." I specified. "Rabbit ears."

By this time he knew that because he was already in the mirror tugging at them. Tod and I looked at each other then burst out laughing which we stopped immediately when both Mom and Dad glared at us.

"Ok, which one of you did this?" Dad said.

"We didn't do it!"

"Yeah! We thought you put them on."

"Obviously, your father--" Mom was cut off by the doorbell. She got up and put a robe on. "Don't worry, I've got it. You guys go get dressed." She pushed us out of the door with her and went downstairs while we went to check out the window.

"That looks like an icecream truck."

"Maybe it broke down and he'll give us free icecream!"

We raced down the stairs and heard Mom talking to someone at the door. He had a funny suit on and thin, wiry glasses. He was showing his clipboard to Mom.

"Yes, that's my husband, but we didn't order anything..."

"I know this, ma'am. This is about what other people have ordered and if your husband doesn't leave soon-" He saw Dad coming down the stairs with a baseball cap to cover his head. "Ah, good. I'm assuming your ears came in nicely?"

He adusted his hat. "How do you, uh, what ears? Who are you anyways?"

"There's no time for that. I need you to take this and this," he handed him the clipboard and a suit on a hanger. "And be on your way soon." He started to leave but Dad stopped him.

"Hang on, I didn't order anything."

"I know, I know. Listen, do you want those ears to go away? Yes? Then put that on, take the clipboard and that truck there, and make the deliveries." Then he was gone.

"That truck is ours!"

"Awesome!"

"Tod, stay inside!" Mom said. "Maggie, get back in here! That truck is not ours."

Too late, I was already in the back. "There's Easter eggs in here!"

"Mom! That's unfair I want some too!"

"No one is taking anything from that truck. Maggie, get in here now!"

I hopped out and ran back inside. "Dad, the guy said it was yours right? So those are our eggs."

"No. These are addresses to people's houses. Apparently, I'm suppose to take stuff to people's houses." He looked up from the clipboard. "I think I'm the Easter bunny."

Me and Tod looked at each other again. ".........AWESOME."

Mom muttered something about coffee while we dragged Dad back up stairs. "You've gotta get dressed! We gotta go!"

"No, no, no. No one is going anywhere especially in that truck. It could be anyone's."

"Dad," I pulled him down to my level and snatched to cap off his head. "You have real life rabbit ears. What more proof do you need!?"

He sighed and rubbed his eyes. "Give me the suit."

"Yes!" We went to get dressed while he went to his room and we heard Mom trying to talk Dad out of it but when we came out she was dressed too.

"Let's go!"

"How long is all of this going to take?" Mom asked him.

"Well, all the addresses are local so not long from the looks of it."

We piled in the truck and took off. We even found three more headbands with rabbit ears on them. They got to the first stop and took a basket into a sitting room full of people who laughed at Dad's funny suit and our bunny ears. Then we were sent to a park. The instructions said to hide them so we did. Mom and Dad hid them in way too obvious places so me and Tod went looking for the perfect hiding places. Behind a tree, under a bench, and on the slides, we even managed to get one to sit on a tree branch. Tod tried to keep one but I told him I was going to tell if he did even though I wanted one too.

That's how the rest of our day went. Delivering baskets and hiding eggs. When we got back home in the late afternoon we were all so tired from laughing at each other that we almost didn't see the basket at our door with a little card that said 'Thank You'. We took it inside and ate some of it while watching tv and soon we noticed Dad's ears were gone. I tried to tell my friends when they asked what I did for Easter but they still don't believe that my dad was the Easter bunny.

Happy Easter everyone! Sorry for the late post but I hope you enjoyed the story. I guess you could say that this was a good idea from the 'plot bunny'. See what I did there?! Ha ha!......yeah. *ahem* Now to rest after a heavy Easter lunch. :) Next post will be really special. See you then!

The 12 Things in my Life that Reading/Writing Gave to me

Tis the season for cold winter weather and holiday cheer. I'm feeling particularly in the holiday spirit tonight because snow decided to make an appearance. Yea! I might be in the minority but that makes me happy. So I call for CHRISTMAS THEMED BLOG POSTS! Yes!

So I would like to talk about the 12 things in my life that reading and writing gave to me, minus the partridge in a pear tree:

12 thousand new friends
I have made so many new friends just through the shared love of writing. Whether you're in real life or here in the Internet life I appreciate you guys so much for inspiring me and keeping my creative fire burning.

11 hundred lost pencils
I promise, it's like every time I turn around I can't find a pencil. Even if I was just using it then it would be gone in two seconds. I'll blame it on a tiny pencil thief.

10 hurting fingers
From typing to writing and back to typing these fingers keep moving and they can get a little tired. I've mentioned that I write by hand before. That wore my hand out this past month especially.

9 ways to procrastinate (at least)
I can find any reason to drop what I'm doing and read a book. And when I start reading I can spend forever in the pages no matter what has to be done. Is it wrong that I find that fantastic?

8 half empty journals
Probably more than that really. I like finding journals from when I was a kid and seeing what it was that I thought was so important back then. They were never full though, always had a bunch of empty pages sitting at the back.

7 days of 'vacation' a week
Have you ever heard someone say something about escaping into a book? How you can go anywhere when you have something to read? That's true. I lose track of time when I'm in a good book and even when I'm writing. I'm not thinking about anything that's going on in real life, just what's in my own made up world.

6 dollars of library fines
Unfortunately that's not a grand total. That's more like a bi-monthly thing. I told you I have problems with procrastination...

5 GOLD PLOT BUNNIES!!
If you do NaNoWriMo then you know what I'm talking about. OK, so I don't know if they're really gold and I don't believe there are only 5. When I get those creative juices flowing it's like plots populate my brain like bunnies reproducing. It's fantastic and horrible all at the same time. How am I suppose to write all these ideas at once!?

4 favorite snack foods
Chips, hot chocolate, tea, and candy. Anything hand held. Enough said.

3 hurting body parts
Most recently it has become my wrist. I may have carpal tunnel. Yea... Then when I'm staying up late reading or writing I usually get a headache and that's followed by a stomach ache. No fun.

2 sore eyes
Reading for a long amount of time can be really bad on my eyes and usually leads to one of the three things before. Not to mention looking at a computer screen for just as long when I'm typing something up.

And a binder full of short stories
The binder I have full of my stories from years ago till recently is one of the things that I love the most. It not only shows just how much work I've put into what is now going to be my career but a reminder of how I have so much fun with it. Most of the stories that I have in there is from before I ever thought of writing as a career. I see those and I remember why I do what I do.

What's a few of your twelve things that writing has given you?

Welcome to Scribbles and Shorts!

Hi! Thanks for visiting Scribbles and Shorts! My name is Sarah, and I’m pretty excited to start this blog. I hope it’ll be as much fun for you as it is for me.

The posts you’ll see on Scribbles and Shorts will be all about reading and writing, from summaries of different books to short stories posted just for fun. We’ll even get into things you might think about as an author like where ideas for plots come from, where you find the time to write in your busy schedules, even where you like to write.

I would love feedback on any of these subjects, so please, comment away! I want to know what everyone thinks, not just tell you what I think. Suggest a book you want to know about. Give me a topic for a short story you want to see me write and post. Everything will be kept PG of course. Constructive criticism is appreciated too. Do you think I’m doing something bad? Don’t just say ‘this is dumb!’ Tell me what it is that's dumb! I’ll take all comments into consideration. I also wouldn’t mind if you told me what I was doing good. :)

Another thing I thought I should mention is the ads over to the right. I hear that a lot of people don’t like to see ads and that is completely reasonable. I understand that they can be annoying, but I think these seem pretty unobtrusive. Ignore them if you wish.

Anyways, thanks for coming by! I’ll be posting at least twice a month, probably every second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Saturday. See you then.
